Cross Harbour Tunnel
Since November 2010 Serco has been managing, operating and maintaining the Cross-Harbour Tunnel in Hong Kong. Our six-year contract with the Department of Transport employs more than 250 people who work together to ensure that an average of 120,000 vehicles per day pass through the tunnel without incident.
The 1.8 km long Tunnel first opened in 1972 and is now considered Hong Kong’s busiest tunnel, generating approximately HK$700 million in toll revenue annually.
Under the contract, Serco staff are required to operate the tunnel 24-hours a day, ensuring good traffic flow despite congestion or adverse weather conditions. We achieve this through the support of our vehicle recovery and operations team which is responsible for efficient incident management. The team deals with roadside incidents and removes road blocks promptly when they occur, whilst keeping commuters up-to-date through the Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS) devices. Serco is also responsible for the maintenance of this system.
