Meet our people
The Serco people who bring to life the vibrant heart of Serco
The innovators
Henrik Hahn Thomsen - Traffic Camera Services, Victoria Australia
Henrik Hahn-Thomsen from our Traffic Camera Services contract in Victoria developed an innovative tool which dramatically improved the safety of operators of the Vitronic PoliScan Speed system.
The Vitronic PoliScanSpeed is a speed camera system that uses infrared laser to detect speeding traffic. Previously, Vitronic PoliScan speed operators were required to leave their vehicles to make adjustments to the camera. This practice was unreliable and operators were subsequently exposed to dangerous roads and distracted drivers.
Henrik's innovation involved mapping a trapezoid to the edges of the road, and combining this with several related algorithms to allow the system operator to sight and adjust the camera from with the safety of their own car.
The Sustainability team - Borallon Correctional Centre, Queensland Australia
Serco Borallon Correctional Centre's unique Sustainability Strategy has established the centre as a leader in its field.
The programme provides a rare opportunity for prisoners to depart their sentencing with recognised accreditation in sustainable practice - an opportunity that provides prisoners with a clear advantage in entering and contributing to their communities
The team's strategy has received numerous awards. In 2010, the programme received a Queensland Minister's Awards for Excellence and a finalist award from the National Safety Council of Australia for the delivery of Environmentally Sustainable Work Practices.
The centre's Sustainability Strategy which was originally unique to Borallon has now been adopted and implemented in two other Queensland correctional centres.
The Pups in Prison team - Borallon Correctional Centre, Queensland Australia
In March last year, the 'Pups in Prison' programme commenced at Borallon prison - the first of its kind to run in an Australian high security prison. The programme is a joint venture between the not-for-profit organisation Assistance Dogs Australia and Serco.
As part of the programme, prisoners train pups to work as assistance dogs for people with disabilities. The programme is aimed at reducing re-offending behaviour and it also helps prisoners to develop their reading, writing and communication skills through the upkeep of a daily diary.
The Pups in Prison team is committed to making a difference to the lives of others and has devoted a large amount of time to the care of the puppies and the programme itself.
Inspirational leadership
Rod Chisholm - Serco Immigration Services

The Heart Award
Christmas Island Staff - Serco Immigration Services, Australia
Early in the morning of 15 December 2010, Serco staff on their way to work in Christmas Island Detention Centre spotted a wooden boat carrying a large number of men, women and children clearly in difficulty. Tragically, rough seas washed the boat onto the shoreline causing the people on board to be thrown into the water
Our Serco staff showed immense bravery and courage in working tirelessly and selflessly in harrowing circumstances to ensure that the survivors and the deceased were treated in a humane and dignified manner; remaining on-site at the rescue centre until all were brought ashore.
Since the rescue the same staff continued to care for the victims, ensuring they had access to as much support as we could provide. Their absolute and continued commitment in deeply distressing circumstances, is and was, deeply impressive and awe inspiring.
The Christmas Island Team consists of Ian Southerton, John Couttie, Paul Atkins, Neryl Atkins, Lewis Taikato, Andrew Neville, Lisa Bosner, Larissa Jackson and Hamish Griffin.
